The appearance of an American plane, which was swallowed by a glacier 76 years ago

An American plane came down during World War II after the ice that covered it melted on the island of Iceland, 76 years after it crashed on its way to Britain.

The B-17 bomber was flying over a glacier called “Ijäyaläyokol” in southern Iceland, on September 16, 1944. When the plane crashed, its ten crew miraculously escaped, but its wreckage disappeared and was swallowed up by the glacier.

At the present time, as a result of global warming and melting ice, the wreckage of the plane appeared, albeit in poor condition, but it provides a glimpse into the past.

Residents of the area in which the plane was located see that its wreckage is a tourist attraction, and they refused the call to clean the place from the wreckage of the plane, as some went to the place and took pictures with the wreckage and posted photos on social networking sites.

In 1996 the US Air Force revealed the details behind the crash of this plane in 1944. It was on its way to Britain after refueling at Keflavik airport on the island.

But the weather conditions were poor in Iceland at the time and the plane got stuck in a strong wind hurricane before it fell over the glacier.

Fortunately, the plane fell on the snow was light and the fuselage slid until it came to rest on the snow.

One of the plane's wings was broken, and one of its engines burned out.

Some of the crew members jumped through the holes in the fuselage, while the rest managed to escape before it burst into flames.

The flight crew had no idea where they had fallen and were unable to send a request for help to the US Air Force.

They decided to leave the glacier after two days and proceeded to a nearby valley, where some farmers from the "Fleuchlio" region offered them assistance.
