  • In Lyon, Perrache station continues to change.

  • On the south side, a pavilion was opened to travelers on Tuesday to allow them direct access to platforms J and K without taking the escalators.

  • Nicknamed "Goldorak", the imposing escalators will be dismantled within a few weeks.

Its imposing stature and metallic appearance have earned it the nickname "Goldorak".

But the giant is dying.

Soon, the gigantic escalator, erected at the southern entrance to Perrache station in Lyon, will be dismantled.

Subscribed to repeated breakdowns, escalators, condemned for a few weeks, will be permanently erased from the landscape.

A first visible sign of the metamorphosis of the station, which should be completely revamped by 2026.

Another sign of changing times: since Tuesday, a new “passenger pavilion” has been opened on the Place des Archives.

From there, users can now directly access platforms J and K, without having to climb the interminable iron stairs and then descend to the other side, as has been the case for more than forty years.

People with disabilities also have a ramp that does not require them to take the elevators.

Signs indicating train arrivals and departures and ticket machines have also been installed.

A new passenger pavilion has been built on the south side of the entrance to Perrache station in Lyon, thus making it easier for travelers to walk out of the station.

Double the number of visitors to the multimodal hub

"This new access, worked with the architects of the French buildings, is part of the continuity of the Place des Archives, designed as a large station forecourt", explains Aude Rechatin, director of the Stations & connections project at the SNCF.

What was missing until then.

“This will develop intermodality.

When exiting the station, travelers will have direct access to the tramway and the car park.

They will be able to find their way easily and also go to the faculties (Catholic University) ”, she continues.

Through the renovation of Perrache station and by "breaking the lock", the authorities hope to reunite the Lyon peninsula and boost the number of visitors to the multimodal hub, which is used annually by 100,000 users.

“The goal is to reach 200,000 travelers by 2030,” says Grégory Doucet, the environmental mayor of Lyon.

Today, 15,000 work in the Confluence district.

In ten years, they will be 25,000 ”.

Next steps on the schedule: the extension of the T2 tramway line to the Hôtel de Région, scheduled for March 2021, and one month later, the reopening of the western arch of Perrache.

This space, formerly reserved for cars, will be reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

This will allow them to directly link the Place Carnot to that of the Archives, without taking the Perrache station, nor the surrounding streets.
