Since 2015, the situation has been locked in the view of asylum and migration policy.

The Commission's goal today is to find a way to deal with asylum applications and migration within the EU in a way that all Member States can accept.

May threaten the union as a project

SVT's European correspondent describes the migration issue as the most charged issue in the EU.

- This is an issue that could potentially threaten the whole Union as a project.

It is a strong opinion in many countries that is at least partly associated with dissatisfaction with migration policy, says David Boati in SVT's Morgonstudion.

Some of the issues that the EU has not been able to resolve are the issues of a fair distribution and the EU's relationship with Turkey.

- The EU has, one might say, made itself a little dependent on Turkey through an agreement on migrants.

President Erdogan and Turkey are helping, so to speak, to keep Europe's borders closed and that is not entirely straightforward, says David Boati.

The right to asylum questioned

Two other deadlocks are the right to asylum and the division that exists within the EU.

- There are those who believe that the right to asylum has played its role, the right to asylum came after the Second World War and was primarily about helping people from neighboring countries on the run.

Now the world looks different so the right to asylum is questioned, says David Boati.
