The pandemic caused by the coronavirus will reduce the life expectancy of Spaniards by around one year.

The estimates published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) also put the increase in deaths in Spain at 51,513 in 2020, 12.4% more than in the previous year.

The report on population projections between 2020 and 2070, published this Tuesday by the INE, places the drop in life expectancy at 0.9 years for men and 0.8 for women.

Thus, the life expectancy indicators at birth are reduced to 80.01 years for men and 85.44 years for women.

The decline would be recovered in 2021, as detailed in the resolution of the study.

Mortality numbers will also regain similar figures to 2019 next year.

However, the INE estimates that 2020 will end with 466,583 deaths, which is 12.4% more than the previous year.

If this trend is confirmed, this year 51,513 people in our country would die more than usual.

According to the Ministry of Health, as of September 21 there were 30,663 deaths with a positive test for Covid-19.

At the end of May, the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) already warned that the records showed an unusual increase of 43,000 deaths since March.

Lower migratory balance

Another demographic consequence directly related to the pandemic according to the INE is the decrease in the migratory balance, which remains positive in 2020, but "very low", as described in the report.

Although last year there was a migratory balance in Spain of more than 450,000 people, estimates put the balance in 2020 at around 110,000.

Unlike the mortality and life expectancy data, the INE does not foresee that the trend will recover in 2021, but that the low levels will remain and the migratory balance in Spain will increase "slightly" in the coming years.
