Already on Monday morning, a long caravan gathered with cars, motorcycles and bicycles that traveled together towards the Ministry of Labor, in a demonstration organized by several large unions, reports AP.

In the afternoon, hundreds of people gathered in Plaza Bolivar in central Bogota in a protest that ended with several protesters throwing stones at police.

The demonstrations in Colombia, which have been going on for some time, are aimed partly at President Ivan Duque, and partly at events with police brutality that have occurred in recent times.

However, after arrest

Last week, two Colombian police officers were charged with assault and manslaughter, following a high-profile case in which a man died after being arrested by police.

The 46-year-old man was arrested when he was suspected of violating coronary restrictions, while moving in a company that drank alcohol on the street.

A video shows how police used electric shock pistols against the man when he was lying on the ground.

According to a lawyer representing the man's relatives, he later died at a police station, after also being beaten.

The incident has led to strong reactions and has triggered major protests in the country against police violence.

Several people have died during the protests.

Wants to resume government-critical protests

Extensive government-critical protests were carried out in Colombia at the end of autumn 2019, but the situation calmed down somewhat during the Christmas holidays.

Both unions and leaders within student organizations have tried to resume the demonstrations, but those plans had to be put on hold when the corona pandemic spread in the country during the spring.

Unemployment in the big cities has risen to almost 25 percent due to the closure of the country during the pandemic.

Something that can further drive the protests in the country, as there is a concern that possible tax and pension reforms may mean worse conditions for workers in the country, writes AP.
