In Alsace, it was someone.

Gilbert Meyer, emblematic former mayor of Colmar and former deputy, died Monday evening at the age of 78.

He had been a figure of the local right, aedile of the Haut-Rhin prefecture for 25 years, from 1995 to 2020 and deputy RPR then UMP elected in 1993, 1997 and 2002.

During the last municipal elections, in difficulty after the first round in mid-March, he appeared very tired in the following weeks and suddenly threw in the towel just before the second round at the end of June.

At the beginning of May, the "old lion of the Hardt" had suffered a stroke and also suffered from cancer.

Upon the announcement of his death, reactions multiplied.

As from his former opponent and new mayor of Colmar.

“We all share the pain of his family and the sadness of his friends,” Eric Straumann (LR) wrote on Twitter.

"Let us salute his work and honor his memory"

“I am sad to learn of the death of Gilbert Meyer,” the centrist senator from Haut-Rhin and former minister Jean-Marie Bockel also said in a statement.

“I first want to salute the one who for a quarter of a century was the emblematic mayor of Colmar.

We then established a friendly and lasting cooperation between our two cities ”, continued the one who was mayor of Mulhouse.

“Gilbert had a very complete and sometimes skittish character, but he was faithful in friendship, I can attest to that.

It is a "giant" of Alsatian political life who is leaving.

Let us salute his work and honor his memory!

», Concluded Jean-Marie Bockel.
