In the clip above, Karin Malmquist, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration, explains why they have chosen to blow up the tunnel at night.

In the spring of 2020, the Swedish Transport Administration began to operate Västlänken's main tunnel towards Stora Hamnkanalen, and in October the work will continue under the Residence in Gothenburg.

Calculations made by the Swedish Transport Administration show that the guideline values for noise, which are set by the Land and Environmental Court, will be exceeded.

Nevertheless, the Swedish Transport Administration and the County Administrative Board in Stockholm choose to do these works at night.

- We see that the impact on the environment is less at night, says Karin Malmquist, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.

It is the residents of Skräddaregatan and Södra Hamngatan who are offered accommodation in hotels, or other apartments in the city, during the period 1 October to 30 April 2021.

Not possible to move the county administrative board

The reason why the Swedish Transport Administration chooses to do these works at night is that they do not want to interfere with the county administrative board's work, whose office premises are located in the area.

It appears from a letter that the Swedish Transport Administration has written to the residents of the tenant-owner associations concerned:

“In the Residence, the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland County has several office premises.

Their mission is both broad and complex as they must ensure that decisions from the Riksdag and the government are implemented in the county.

The County Administrative Board also coordinates government activities and moving them is not considered possible without seriously affecting socially important functions. ”

Unclear cost

The estimated cost for the residents who have to move is still unclear.

- I can not say anything about what the costs will be.

It depends partly on how many people choose this offer from the Swedish Transport Administration and partly on which solution each family chooses, says Karin Malmquist, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.
