A government investigation, carried out by the Swedish Transport Administration and corresponding Danish authorities, is now examining opportunities and costs for building tunnels under the Sound: one for trains and one for road transport.

Users pay

- The road tunnel would be user-financed, which means that you pay to ride in it.

In the same way as we pay to travel by ferry or over the Öresund Bridge today, says Angelica Nilsson, unit manager for society and infrastructure in Helsingborg.

The latest calculation from 2014 indicated that tunnel construction would cost DKK 34 billion, according to Angelica Nilsson.

- It is a social investment that pays off in the fairly short term, she says.

Next step - where to build the tunnels

At the turn of the year, after just over two years of work, the investigation will now be presented.

If the government thinks that the tunnel project is promising, the state will proceed with investigating where the tunnels will be built.

Helsingborg is now lobbying for its cause - that the tunnels will become a reality.

It is a decision that all parties in the municipality are behind, even if the MP and V want to say no to a car tunnel.

Virtual visits

All actors involved must be processed, says Cecilia Eklund, lobbyist for the city.

- We have meticulous work ahead of us until December.

We will have virtual visits to Helsingborg with parliamentary parties, and also process the ministries, other government agencies, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise and LO, among others.

- Everyone should understand how important the issue is, she says.
