September 21, 2020 "Today we celebrate a success. The UN has made the life of the international community better. We do not ignore the shortcomings and inadequacies of its system. In spite of these, successful action has been taken to remove or reduce international tensions; so that conflicts could find a solution peaceful; so that the world's agenda would take note of the inequalities between peoples to be sheltered and the limited resources available on Earth ".

Sergio Mattarella said this, speaking via video at the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the UN.

"We face formidable adversaries: intolerance, underdevelopment, inequalities, climate change", said the President of the Republic: "The effectiveness of the peace initiatives that constitute the heart of the actions of the UN headquarters must increase" .

"Each generation - continued Mattarella - has its own tests. Humanitarian crises reappear which, in turn, cause migratory crises; terrorism; a renewed race to rearmament: they determine new tensions and question trust among the Countries. Preventive diplomacy to avoid conflicts is the way forward.

The UN - he concluded - must be able to take on and manage the necessary peace initiatives ".

"Fifty years after the conference that saw a world assembly of young people gathered in New York to discuss their future, the world we intend to entrust to the new generations must be better than the one we have inherited. The United Nations is an instrument for this. objective, to give hope to the future of humanity ".
