Mali's former Defense Minister named President

"The board, created to determine the persons who will lead during the transitional period, after discussion, determined: Mr. Ba Ndau was appointed president of the transitional period, Colonel Assimi Goyta - vice president," the message says.

On 18 August, the President and Prime Minister of Mali were arrested by the rebel military in their homes.

Mali's leader Ibrahim Boubacar Keita later announced his resignation.

The UN Security Council condemned the military mutiny in Mali and called for the immediate release of all detained officials.
