Former Minister of Defense Ba N'Daou was appointed interim president of Mali on Monday September 21, national television reported on Monday.

Colonel Assimi Goïta, the head of the junta which seized power in August, has, for his part, been appointed vice-president.

The military junta that overthrew Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta wanted the coming transitional government to be led by the military, when the M5-RFP (Mouvement du 5 Juin-Rassemblement des Forces patriotiques) and African leaders in the region demanded that the task be be entrusted to civilians.

Elements of the Malian army seized power on August 18, arresting President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and several members of the government, saying they wanted to put an end to the political turbulence the country was going through.
