• Elections: The far right hopes to snatch fiefdoms from the left in Italy's regionals

  • Coronavirus: Italy votes a referendum and regional elections in the middle of a pandemic

The 'yes' to the cut of a third of the parliamentarians has won the referendum in Italy

with between 60% and 64% of the votes

, according to the first exit polls.

The 'no' would have obtained a result in the range between 36% and 40%, according to this survey by the Opinio Italia company of the public television Rai.

Some 51 million Italians were called to vote in the referendum held this Sunday and today, Monday, to

reduce the number of parliamentarians from the current 945 to 600

, between deputies and senators.

The polls closed today at 3:00 p.m. local time after being open on Sunday between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., both for this referendum on the constitutional reform to cut off parliamentarians and for the elections in seven regions and about a thousand municipalities of the country.

Voters had to vote 'yes' or 'no' to the question: "Do you approve the text of the constitutional law on amendments to articles 56, 57 and 59 of the Constitution on reducing the number of parliamentarians"?

With the reform, the Chamber of Deputies will have - in the next legislature and not in the current one -

400 members instead of the current 630, while in the Senate there will be 200 senators, instead of the current 315.

The consultation should have been held last March, but was postponed as a result of the coronavirus emergency.

No minimum participation quorum is required, so the reform is finally approved if there are more 'Yeses' than 'Noes'.

The consultation has historically been defended by the governmental Five Star Movement, which relies on a

necessary reduction in the costs of politics

and greater efficiency of the institutions.
