The soil has been contaminated with the substance dioxin for almost 80 years, which poses a health risk and makes it difficult to use the area.

In 2021, the work with decontamination will be prepared and in 2022 the efforts will be carried out, the County Administrative Board of Östergötland writes in a press release.

- It is gratifying that money has now been granted for the remediation of one of the county's prioritized action objects and that the environmental and health risks that exist in the area can be remedied.

It is also very positive that a smaller municipality like Åtvidaberg takes the initiative and responsibility for resolving environmental debts within its municipality, says Markus Gustafsson, acting head of operations for polluted areas at the County Administrative Board of Östergötland.

- The redevelopment opens up opportunities such as using the area for, for example, grazing land for animals and outdoor life for humans, says Johan Älvedal, operations manager at the construction and environmental office in Åtvidaberg.
