Wang Yang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, delivered a video speech at the conference.
On behalf of the CPC Central Committee and General Secretary Xi Jinping, Wang Yang first extended cordial greetings to the guests, especially Taiwan compatriots.
He pointed out that the foundation of the development of cross-strait relations lies with the people and the driving force lies with the people.
Since the Straits Forum was successfully held in 2009, it has been passed on every year through rain or shine.
This year, despite the adverse effects of the new crown pneumonia epidemic and human obstruction on the island, the forum was still grandly held. A large number of Taiwan compatriots attended the meeting, which fully proved that the people on both sides of the strait are sincere and strong in their willingness to communicate.
Wang Yang emphasized that opening up brings progress, and closure will inevitably lag behind.
The development of cross-strait relations over the past few decades has proved that exchanges will benefit both, while isolation will hurt both.
Since the beginning of this year, the world economic situation has been extremely severe, and the cross-strait trade volume has maintained double-digit growth, which fully demonstrates that the mainland of the motherland has always been Taiwan's strongest backing and most assured support.
Some people on the island are trying to restrict cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, vainly trying to "disconnect" the mainland's economy and "broken the link" of culture, which will do all harm to Taiwan but not benefit.
"Taiwan independence" is a dead end, and taking foreigners' self-respect and taking risks will only bring unbearable risks to Taiwan.
We will not tolerate any damage to national sovereignty, security, and development interests.
Wang Yang emphasized that expanding non-governmental exchanges and promoting integrated development between the two sides of the strait is both righteous and more profitable. There is no reason not to get closer and better.
We insist on advancing the peaceful development of cross-strait relations on the basis of the "92 Consensus". Our focus and goal is to enhance the family affection and well-being of our compatriots, so that compatriots on both sides of the strait can lead a better life.
In recent years, the mainland of the motherland has successively launched a series of measures to benefit Taiwan and the people. More and more Taiwan compatriots choose to come to the mainland to study, work, start a business and live in the mainland.
We will further improve the institutional arrangements and policy measures that benefit Taiwan compatriots, promote the quality and efficiency of cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, and help more Taiwanese youth to pursue, build and realize their dreams on the mainland.
It is hoped that compatriots on both sides of the strait will uphold national justice, follow the general trend of history, do more that is conducive to the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and enhance the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the strait, share the historical responsibility of the reunification of the motherland, and contribute to the historic cause of national rejuvenation.
