His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, is heading the country's delegation to the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and on September 29th, he will deliver a video-conference speech before the General Assembly.

The state delegation to the General Assembly will participate in the discussions that will be held by Member States, United Nations officials and other stakeholders, on the current status of multilateral work, the challenges facing it and ways to achieve progress.

Although the "Covid-19" pandemic will overshadow many discussions, the UAE will focus on the need to identify areas of convergence in terms of confronting other global challenges, such as nuclear proliferation, terrorism, climate change and inequality.

In a statement, the UAE reaffirmed its firm commitment to global cooperation, and set the seven goals that it will focus on during its participation in the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which include “supporting regional stability in the Middle East and North Africa, and promoting tolerance, coexistence and interfaith dialogue,” And assisting the most vulnerable groups in facing (Covid-19), and facing climate change by mitigating its effects and adapting to it, supporting the empowerment of women, investing in the sustainable development goals, and encouraging innovation and preparing for the future.

In the face of growing global challenges, the UAE affirmed that it will remain a strong supporter of the multilateral approach, based on achieving results that serve humanity, whether it is related to continuing to provide the necessary support to confront the "Covid-19" pandemic, or to advance women's empowerment and confront nuclear proliferation, And encouraging the transformation in the field of energy and sustainability, or combating terrorism and extremism, stressing that it will continue to invest the time and effort necessary to bring about positive change in the multilateral system.

The UAE indicated, in its statement, that it firmly believes in the importance of preparing for the future, and that with the approaching 50th anniversary of its founding, the state will continue to work to encourage innovation and creativity as two main means of adaptation and response against current and future challenges.

The general debate of the United Nations General Assembly, which extends for a whole week, is an annual gathering attended by world leaders and witnesses a series of important meetings that address the most important global challenges.

It is noteworthy that the work of the General Assembly will be held this year by default, in view of the "Covid-19" pandemic.

On the other hand, the permanent representative of the UAE to the United Nations in Geneva, Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, delivered a statement to the 45th session of the Human Rights Council on behalf of the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, as part of the panel discussion on development.

Al-Zaabi stressed that the GCC countries are aware of the importance of strengthening international cooperation more than ever before, to confront the urgent challenges posed by the crisis of the "Covid-19" pandemic, and also take this opportunity to stress the importance of focusing in the next phase on building a unified vision and strategy to enhance international cooperation. In order to achieve sustainable development and mitigate the severe economic damages resulting from the pandemic, which deepened the gap between the countries of the world, and left new forms of inequality in a manner that causes great concern.

He pointed out that the countries of the Cooperation Council share the invitation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to give a new spirit to multilateral action in the field of international cooperation, to share responsibility for rebuilding what the pandemic has destroyed and to help the developing countries, the most affected, to recover again.

In the statement, he stressed that the GCC states pay great attention to the issue of international cooperation, and have strengthened this trend during the pandemic, as they rushed to provide all forms of support to countries affected by the pandemic, and also contributed to strengthening response efforts in international organizations, such as the World Health Organization, through Its material contributions, and it is committed to continuing this approach based on shared responsibility and international solidarity.

He stressed that the GCC countries are aware of the urgent need to increase investment in human capital in light of the pandemic, as it is vital for development and economic transformation of countries, and to enhance the well-being and prosperity of citizens, pointing to the unwavering commitment of the GCC states in the field of human development, as they allocate a large proportion of their budgets to support Human capital, and the GCC countries are among the first countries in the world to adopt the World Bank’s human capital project, as it is a global effort to improve investment in people, especially in the field of education and health, and it is the same vision that the GCC countries will continuously develop.

Al-Zaabi pointed out that the GCC states are looking forward to benefiting from the views of all participants in this seminar on ways to develop international cooperation during and after the pandemic, in order to promote sustainable development in an appropriate manner.
