China News Agency, United Nations, September 20. Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, wrote to the rotating chairman of the Security Council and the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the 20th, expressing its opposition to the United States' unilateral announcement on the 19th that the Security Council will resume sanctions against Iran.

Zhang Jun pointed out in the letter that the United States has withdrawn from the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue in May 2018 and is no longer a participant in the comprehensive agreement. There is no basis for the United States to request the Security Council to initiate a "quick restoration of sanctions" mechanism.

Thirteen members of the Security Council told the President of the Security Council in August this year that any decision or action based on the previous letter from the US has no legal, political or practical effect.

The President of the Security Council has concluded that he will not take action on the US request.

Zhang Jun emphasized that for the above reasons, the "quick restoration of sanctions" mechanism against Iran has not been activated, and the Security Council will continue to terminate relevant sanctions against Iran in accordance with the requirements of Resolution 2231.

China is committed to maintaining the validity of the comprehensive agreement and the authority of the Security Council resolutions, and will continue to promote the political settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue.
