Matar Mohammed Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Roads and Transport Authority, said that the implementation of pedestrian bridges in the emirate of Dubai comes as a translation of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to develop the quality of life in the city to achieve happiness for residents And the shift towards sustainable and less polluting transport to the environment, as it comes in implementation of the instructions of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, to make a bicycle friendly city, as it includes some pedestrian bridges, parking lots and bike paths. The framework of the traffic safety strategy for the emirate of Dubai with "zero deaths", so that the emirate of Dubai will be the safest in the world in the field of traffic safety by 2021.

He added: The pedestrian bridge in the Marina District is distinguished by its distinctive design as an architectural icon to add to the beauty of the Marina District, which is a destination for visitors and lovers of the sea, and provides a unique experience for residents and visitors of the Emirate of Dubai, noting that the design of the bridge façade is inspired by the urban nature of the region, and the shape and color are consistent with shapes and colors The surrounding buildings, and the curved shape of the bridge expresses the nature of the coastal site and the fluidity that it will achieve by providing coherence and harmony with the surrounding buildings, and the bridge allows pedestrians to move between the different sides of the intersection completely freely, without the need to stop at the traffic lights.

Al Tayer explained that the implementation of a pedestrian bridge of this size in the Marina area came for several reasons, including the large number of pedestrians at the intersection, which exceeds 2,300 people during peak hours, while the number of vehicles that use the intersection reaches about 2000 vehicles during peak hours in each direction. The number of people crossing the intersection towards the Jumeirah Beach Residence area at the weekend, with more than 1000 people in each direction, and also the reason for crossing the Dubai Tram to the intersection every six minutes, the presence of two Dubai tram stations, bus stops, and the absence of any pedestrian crossings near the intersection .

The Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors affirmed that the Roads and Transport Authority pays special attention to pedestrian safety and has been keen since its establishment to provide safe means of transport for pedestrians to cross the road, and has set several criteria on the basis of which sites for the implementation of pedestrian bridges are chosen in the Emirate of Dubai, through traffic studies that take into account the intensity of movement. Traffic, the number of pedestrian accidents and deaths, the maximum road speed, the number of road lanes, the density of population movement on both sides of the road, the distance to the nearest pedestrian crossing, the location of public transport bus stops, in addition to the areas where markets and institutions are concentrated, and the sites where a large proportion of accidents are recorded. Run over.

Al Tayer called on residents, including citizens, residents and visitors, to use bridges and tunnels designated to cross the road, and also called on vehicle drivers to adhere to the speed limit and reduce it at pedestrian crossings, in the interest of their safety and the safety of road users.

It should be noted that the number of pedestrian bridges in Dubai increased from 13 bridges in 2006 to 129 bridges until the end of 2020, and the authority intends to implement 36 pedestrian bridges during the period from 2021 to 2026, bringing the total number of pedestrian bridges to 165 bridges, and the authority completed in 2018 and 2019 Three pedestrian bridges on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, Al Khawaneej and Al Marabe, and this year and next year, nine bridges will be completed, distributed over a number of vital sites, and the authority’s efforts have contributed to improving pedestrian safety, which has contributed to reducing pedestrian deaths in Dubai increased by 76.6% during the period from 2007 to 2019.
