"We are aware of the incident in a flight to the UK on Friday, September 18, and we are taking this matter very seriously," said a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police.

"The police officer involved has since been relieved of his operational duties while he conducts an internal investigation into the circumstances," he added.

Minister Dominic Raab had traveled to Washington to try to allay the concerns of his American partner related to Brexit.
