New York State has decided to erect a statue in memory of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Brooklyn, where the illustrious magistrate and feminist icon grew up.

The dean of the Supreme Court of the United States, who died Friday at the age of 87, "was a monumental figure in the struggle for equality and we all agree that she deserves a monument in her honor", Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement on Saturday.

"New York mourns the death of Judge Ginsburg but remembers with pride that her incredible journey began here in Brooklyn," added the elected Democrat.

Ruth Bader was born on March 15, 1933 into a Jewish family in this then working-class neighborhood, of which she always kept a touch of emphasis.

A graduate of Columbia University in New York, she worked there for a few years as a professor.

"His city and the world are in mourning"

The mayor of the megalopolis Bill de Blasio also paid tribute to this "girl from Brooklyn, a tenacious spirit who has moved our country towards greater justice, equality and morality".

“His city and the world are in mourning,” he tweeted.

Governor Cuomo will now appoint a commission that will choose the artist responsible for making this work and the place where to erect it.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg rose to prominence as a lawyer in the 1970s by winning several court battles that brought down a host of laws discriminating against women.

The death of the one that young Americans had renamed "Notorious RBG" in reference to the murdered rapper Notorious BIG sparked an avalanche of praise but also opened a new political front in an already tense electoral campaign.
