September 19, 2020 - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died aged 87 following complications from pancreatic cancer.

He was 87 years old.

Appointed by Bill Clinton, she was on the Supreme Court since 1993. Born in Brooklyn on March 15, 1933, she died surrounded by her family.

His passing gives President Donald Trump the chance to cement the conservative majority in the US Supreme Court, where he has already appointed Neil Gorsuch and Bret Kavanaugh.

Icon of liberals, Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been a champion of women's rights.

Born in Brooklyn in 1933, she had studied law, formerly a wife and mother, at Harvard, one of nine women in a class of 500 men, then at Columbia.

In the 1970s, as director of the Women's Rights Project of the libertarian organization American Civil Liberties Union, she had debated before the court a series of cases that had created institutional protections against sex discrimination: a legal strategy that she had called for parallels with those of Judge Marshall on the front of black civil rights battles.

Among his tactics, the use of the word "gender" when others used "sex", a word that, in his opinion, confused the judges.

During the Obama administration, Ginsburg rejected calls from liberals to step down so that the president would have a chance to appoint a successor "while there was time".

"There will be another Democratic president," Ruth said, thinking of Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump, who was elected instead of the former First Lady and Secretary of State, dismissed the progressive judge as "no longer in his mind" after Ruth criticized him in a series of pre-election interviews, stating that, if the tycoon conquered the White House, it would move to New Zealand.
