19 September 2020 Starting Monday, some areas of Madrid will be subject to lockdowns to curb the increase in Covid-19 cases that continue to grow across Europe.

The BBC reports online.

The measure affects over 850,000 people in the Madrid region who will be subject to travel and gathering restrictions.

Spain has the largest number of coronavirus cases in Europe and Madrid is again the most affected region.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, there are 625,651 new cases and infection rates in the Madrid region are more than double the national average, the Spanish government says.

The country was among the hardest hit by the first wave of infections with 30,000 deaths.

From Monday, 37 of the most at-risk health districts in the region will be restricted.

Residents will only be able to leave their area to go to work, school or for health care.

Social gatherings will be limited to six people, public parks will be closed and businesses will have to lower the shutters by 10pm.

Germany: 2,297 infections, record increase since April

Germany has recorded almost 2,300 new infections from Covid 19, exactly 2,297, in the past 24 hours, the highest number of daily cases since April.

The increase is still far from the levels recorded at the end of March, when there were over 6 thousand cases daily, but marks a sharp increase compared to the levels recorded during the summer, confirming the resumption of the epidemic that began in August.

According to the bulletin of the Robert Koch Institute, in the last few hours there have been 6 deaths caused by Covid, with the total number of deaths in Germany from the epidemic rising to 9384. 270,070 people have contracted the virus in Germany.

The rate of R0, that is the basic reproduction number, is currently 1.16 in Germany, the institute announced yesterday, with an increase to 1.07 the previous day.

Gb Johnson evaluates new restrictions in the face of rising cases

Boris Johnson will spend the weekend considering whether to decide on new restrictions against Covid after saying that the UK "is now seeing a second wave".

According to reports from the BBC, the British government is evaluating the ban on meetings between different family groups and the reduction of opening hours for pubs and restaurants.

At the moment already 13.5 million British, about a fifth of the population, are subject to restrictions launched in recent days to try to slow down the march of the virus which yesterday registered 4322 cases, with the threshold of 4 thousand daily infections exceeded for the first time since May 8th.

Johnson said yesterday that he does not "want to take lockdown measures" but that distancing measures need to be strengthened.

"Clearly when we look at what is happening we wonder if we should do more than the rule of six set for Monday," he added, referring to the rule that prohibits meetings of more than six people.

It is good for Britain to implement new lockdown measures as soon as possible, "better sooner than later": is the advice of Neil Ferguson, the epidemiologist at Imperial College London, who has long been a consultant to the British government on 'epidemic from Covid-19, but then he was forced to resign because he was' pinched' to meet a woman, in the weeks when the UK was immersed in the strictest confinement "I think we would probably need some additional measures, better sooner that's after, ”Ferguson said.

The scientist believes that the UK has been hit by a "perfect storm" following the easing of controls in summer.

"At the moment - he told BBC radio - we have roughly the same levels of infection that we saw in the country at the end of February. If we let it go another two / four weeks, we will find ourselves as in mid-March and this will clearly cause deaths because people will be hospitalized. I think some additional measures may be needed, better sooner rather than later. In a way we have a perfect storm because people are returning to normal life, schools reopened, cases spike, and therefore the system of test is under strain ".

Russia: Infections on the rise, more than 6 thousand in 24 hours

The number of coronavirus cases returns to increase significantly also in Russia, where in the last 24 hours more than six thousand have been registered for the first time since last July 19 cases.

The total number of people infected since the beginning of the epidemic is 1,097,251.
