People over the age of 70 are offered a senior bus card for SEK 150 a month from next year.

Today, the corresponding card costs SEK 460.

The politicians in the governing majority in the municipal board in Uppsala recently decided this.

The price reduction will be possible through a special agreement between Uppsala Municipality and Uppland's local transport.

The municipality goes in and pushes for a large part of the ticket price for the elderly.

The card is valid for low traffic

The card for seniors will be valid during the low-traffic hours of the day: until 06.00 in the morning, then between 09.00 and 15.00 during the day and after 19.00 in the evening.

The card will also be valid on weekends.

- This investment is part of Uppsala municipality's work to become an elderly-friendly municipality.

We want to counteract involuntary loneliness among the elderly and also increase access to health-promoting and social activities, says Caroline Hoffstedt (S), municipal councilor and chair of the senior citizens' committee, in a press release.

The Social Democrats had subsidized bus passes as an election promise in the 2018 election and then calculated that the price tag for the municipality would be around SEK 13 million per year.
