A UN statement calls for a political solution in Yemen

Eight countries called yesterday for a political solution to end the conflict in Yemen, after a high-level ministerial meeting via the Internet to discuss the Yemen file.

In a joint statement, the major countries in the United Nations that enjoy the right of veto, Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, as well as Germany, Kuwait and Sweden, stressed "the urgent need for de-escalation in all parts of Yemen and a ceasefire in all parts of the country."

The group expressed its regret that the Yemeni parties had not seized the opportunity to reach a ceasefire, after the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, last March, called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

In a brief statement to the closed meeting, Guterres said that five years of war had destroyed the lives of tens of millions of Yemenis.

He added that while more than 2,000 confirmed cases of "Corona" were recorded in Yemen, experts estimate the number of injuries at up to one million people, with a death rate of 30%, as many health facilities were destroyed during the war.
