Due to a rare storm on Friday, a small part of Greece suffered flooding, power cuts and other storm damage.

This concerns a number of islands off the west coast.

Firefighters on Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Ithaka are busy trying to limit the nuisance caused by storm Ianos.

Ianos landed there with gusts of wind of up to 110 kilometers per hour.

Homes and roads were damaged, but no injuries were reported.

In addition to the Ionian Islands, places elsewhere in the west of Greece have to deal with large amounts of rain and strong gusts of wind, but the nuisance there seems to be limited so far.

The wind slowly decreases in strength.

According to meteorologists, Ianos is still milder than initially expected.

Ianos is expected to remain in the west of the country on Friday afternoon, weakening towards the south during the evening.

Central Greece may also have to deal with the storm before it reaches the region around Athens that Saturday.

The storm has tropical features and originated over the Mediterranean.

Similar storms are therefore also called a

medicane

: a composition of

Mediterranean Sea

and

hurricane

(hurricane).

Greece first had to deal with a

medication

in 1995

.

These storms have become more common in recent years.

The penultimate

medicane

was in 2018. A year earlier, 25 people were killed and hundreds of people were left homeless.
