• Negotiation. Bildu establishes the approach of ETA prisoners as a condition to negotiate the Budgets

  • Politics: Pablo Iglesias places ERC and Bildu as preferred partners for the stability of the Government

First white smoke in Moncloa.

The two legs of the Government, PSOE and United We Can, today reached a first agreement on taxation -the great issue of disagreement between the two partners- to raise the rate of the Wealth Tax by 1% for fortunes of more than 10 million euros .

It was one of the claims of Podemos that, in line with the coalition pact, wanted tax increases for the richest.

In a meeting this afternoon, the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, closed this variation in Heritage with the purple negotiator, the Secretary of State for Social Rights, Nacho Álvarez.

It might not be the only fiscal novelty, since Podemos insists on more increases to high incomes, although its claims are far from the great tax reform that the Government advocated and that now the socialist part has wanted to border to favor economic recovery after the pandemic and bring the vote of Citizens closer.

At Moncloa, they were aware that they had to give in to something before their partners in the preparation of Budgets and that taxation was precisely the most controversial issue.

Since the return of the summer, Iglesias has demanded that Pedro Sánchez move away from Cs, a party with which he has strengthened ties since the approval of the state of alarm, imposed negotiation within the Government on the accounts, as a prior step to opening conversations with other formations, and has personally taken the reins of contacts with ERC and Bildu so that they are approved with the support of the investiture parties.

For this reason, this Thursday, although he achieved the increase in the Heritage tax, he also ran into the good result of the meeting between the first vice president of the Government, Carmen Calvo, and the deputy spokesperson for Cs, Edmundo Bal.

Both from the Executive and from the orange formation they agreed that it was "good."

To the chagrin of Pablo Iglesias.

The Government, at least the socialist part, continues to count on this party to negotiate the Budgets and the rest of the legislative projects in the portfolio.

The meeting, within the round that Calvo is holding with all the groups, went so well that it immediately provoked a rejection tweet from the Podemos leader.

The second vice president was quick to state that “the Budgets are the Law that really develops the program of a Government.

The investiture partners, who are clearly expressing their willingness to negotiate them, make up the parliamentary majority that can make the path outlined in the coalition program viable.

In another subsequent message, even more hostile to the approach to Ciudadanos, he defended that “in front of the trio of Colón and its fiscal privileges for the rich, there is a majority that wants fiscal justice, which is what is signed in the program of the coalition government.

In the Budgets it will be noticed that in Spain there is a progressive government in which United We can ».

Just three hours later, that first agreement for the 1% increase in the Wealth Tax, something like the tax on the rich that Podemos is looking for, was already leaking.

The news came late at night.

The impact on the public accounts was not transmitted, neither on the alleged collection nor on the number of taxpayers affected.

These statements and their contrast with the harmony exhibited between Calvo and Bal produced a new day of disharmony in the Government.

A two-headed Executive who speaks with two different voices.

The vice president has achieved that in recent days the Government has winked at ERC, with the reactivation of the dialogue table and the recovery of the reform of the crime of sedition.

But as it was revealed yesterday Sánchez does not abandon the possibility of agreeing on the Budgets with Cs.

In fact, after the interview with Bal, Calvo assured that they agreed with them that "this country needs stability and a response to the problems it has" and "that it is a time to do politics with greatness, with little selfishness."

Citizens, for now, hold on, despite the hostility of Iglesias and his calls to ERC and Bildu.

But Bal warned the first vice president that in the end they will have to choose between Cs or the independentistas because "they are two incompatible routes."

«The vast majority of Spaniards and Brussels want Budgets with Cs», a guarantee of «moderation» and «centrality».

"If we are presented with sensible, focused and reasonable Budgets, full of solutions for the Spanish, Citizens will not care what the rest do," said Bal, to detach his support from what happens with Bildu or ERC.
