More than 55,000 women, girls and children have been treated by
Dr. Mukwege
in his Panzi hospital following sexual violence, rape, genital mutilation, MEPs recalled.
"
A real hero in danger,
" they continued, concerned.
The
Nobel Peace Prize winner
has indeed received
death threats
- threats which the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo must investigate without delay, parliamentarians insisted.
The elected officials welcomed the fact that the famous Congolese gynecologist once again benefits from the protection of
the United Nations
police officers
.
“
Remembrance now remains, justice remains, a pacified Congo, a Congo reconciled with its history, a Congo which puts an end to the impunity of the executioners.
It is this Congo, that of Dr Mukwege, that Europe must support beyond words, in deeds
”, declared Frédérique Ries, Belgian MEP for the Renew group.
In a resolution adopted by a large majority, MEPs support Dr Mukwege's advocacy for justice: the creation of an international criminal court and the creation of mixed chambers with Congolese and international judges within Congolese courts to prosecute the perpetrators human rights violations.
