The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has warned of the dangers that the "Covid-19" pandemic poses to peace everywhere, as it is the most serious threat to international peace and security, especially to people caught in conflicts.

Guterres called on the international community to show solidarity and work together, both within and between societies and countries, in order to strengthen common ties and build peaceful societies able to withstand the dangers posed by the pandemic.

This came during his speech during his participation in the celebration of the International Day of Peace in the Japanese Garden at the United Nations headquarters in New York, which comes a week before the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled for next Tuesday.

The Secretary-General pointed out that the main objective of the founding of the United Nations 75 years ago is to prevent war and promote peace, noting that human rights, respect for the rule of law, access to justice and opportunities for all are the building blocks of peaceful societies.

In his speech, which he delivered before the peace bell rang, he stressed the need to silence the guns and focus on the common global enemy, the Corona pandemic.

The United Nations General Assembly declared the International Day of Peace in 1981 in order to celebrate and promote the ideals of peace among all nations and peoples, and the theme for 2020 is "Building peace together."
