It was already in April this year that the Danish state raised the taxation of cigarettes as a way to get fewer young people to smoke.

But it is only now that the old tobacco stocks with the lower tax rate are sold out, reports TV2 Lorry.

This means that sales in Sweden have picked up speed, as Danish cigarettes are now significantly more expensive.

Copenhagen resident Kaj Aaen now buys his cigarettes in Sweden.

He expects to save 30 percent by shopping in Malmö.

- There is money to be saved - a lot of money, he says to TV2 Lorry.

An average pack of cigarettes now costs DKK 55 in Denmark, compared with SEK 41 before the increase.

The trade association De samvirkende Købmænd now demands that the quota for how many cigarettes may be imported duty-free in Denmark be reduced from 40 to 10 packages.

- It is bad for everyone if Danish smokers go to Sweden to buy cheap cigarettes, says the trade association's Claus Bøgelund Nielsen to TV2 Lorry.
