He added, "The doctors who previously treated her differed over the appropriate treatment methodology for her condition, which made it difficult for her to decide on the next course of treatment for her. One of the surgeons in Britain was not enthusiastic about the idea of undergoing surgery due to the complexity of her condition."

When Lorna consulted Dr. Albert Al-Ahmar, consultant interventional cardiologist and one of Dr. Samra's colleagues at Dr. Soliman Al-Habib Hospital, he immediately subjected her to a series of medical examinations to determine the accurate anatomical and physiological picture of her right heart valves.

Dr. Al-Ahmar told the Gulf News: "After reviewing the results of the tests, the cardiology team at the hospital agreed to replace and repair the damaged valves."

Dr. Abu Samra says, "We opened the patient's chest for a second time to repair the valves, and this reopening is extremely difficult due to the adhesions resulting from the previous surgery. The chest opening alone took approximately three hours."

"The patient was also suffering from pulmonary hypertension, which increased the risk of surgery. Despite all the challenges, we were able to successfully perform the surgery, replace the pulmonary valve and repair the tricuspid valve," he adds.

The patient made an excellent recovery after the surgery and was back home within a week.

"We expect that she will return to her normal activities within weeks," said Dr. Abu Samra, who has long experience in performing serious heart surgeries.
