Officer Nicholas Pierce of the Salt Lake Police Department was dispatched to the scene on April 24 after receiving a report of domestic violence at the home of African American male Jeffrey Ryans.

After a while, he spotted Ryan in the backyard of the house and warned him to "fall to the ground," and even though Ryan was sitting on his knees, Officer Pierce ordered the police dog to attack.

In this accident, Ryans suffered a major injury, tearing the skin of his left leg, and several surgeries.

US prosecutors in Salt Lake County, Utah, have charged Officer Pierce with aggravated assault.

As a result of investigating the body camera images of Officer Pierce, the prosecution said, "Lyons did not resist or threaten the police."

The Salt Lake Police Department has also said it will proceed with disciplinary proceedings for Officer Pierce, who is currently on leave.
