An imperial investiture ceremony to appoint Prime Minister Kan and a certification ceremony for new cabinet ministers were held at the Imperial Palace on the night of the 16th.

At the Imperial Palace, after 5:40 pm, Prime Minister Kan arrived at the palace, and then Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato, Minister for Administrative Reform Kono, and other ministers of the new cabinet entered the palace one after another.

First, an imperial investiture was held at the "Matsu no Ma" in the palace, where His Majesty the Emperor appoints the Prime Minister.

While the chairs of both Houses of Representatives were watching, His Majesty the Emperor told Prime Minister Kan that he would "appoint him as Prime Minister," and former Prime Minister Abe handed him a letter of appointment.

At the certification ceremony that followed, the new cabinet ministers stepped forward one by one in front of His Majesty the Emperor and received a letter of appointment from Prime Minister Kan, who had just completed the imperial investiture.

Then, His Majesty the Emperor said to each and every one of them, "I'm sorry for the hard work."

After that, Prime Minister Kan and each minister took a commemorative photo at the palace and headed to the Prime Minister's Office for the first cabinet meeting.
