The National Elections Authority (ANE) acknowledged on Monday September 14 the difficulties in the organization of the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December 27;

and made some proposals to the Strategic Committee to support the electoral process, to try to catch up, in particular in the enrollment of voters.

An extraordinary council of ministers is due to meet this Tuesday afternoon in Bangui to discuss these proposals.

The authorities' objective: to avoid a postponement of the elections.

But the opposition remains skeptical.

Main measure requested by the ANE: the delay of 15 days of

the voter registration

deadline

.

Initially scheduled for September 27, the deadline for the publication of the electoral lists would therefore be postponed to October 8.

Another request: to double the number of agents for enrollment.

Marcel Djimassé, who represents the majority on the Strategic Committee to Support the Electoral Process, believes that the deadlines could thus be met.

“

If the arrangement proposed by the ANE is accepted by the Constitutional Court and the National Assembly, perhaps yes, we could hold the first round on time.

 "

But for that it would be necessary to modify the electoral code.

Three months before the presidential election

, it seems too short to Sosthène Guetel Dilamkoro, opposition representative on the committee.

“

These are unrealistic proposals, the time for the National Assembly to receive the electoral code, to examine it, to send it back to the Head of State, to the Head of State to send it to the Constitutional Court.

In all likelihood, we will not be able to meet this deadline.

In order not to waste time, you have to get to the point.

We must open a consultation of the living forces to unblock the situation within a framework of consensus.

 "

We must act quickly.

In the event of too much delay, the mandate of the Head of State could come to an end.

All insist on avoiding a power vacuum and a new political transition.
