- We shot one last night, hopefully the one who was here and roared, says Mattias Hammarstedt and points to the roared wound in the rapeseed field.

In recent years, Scanian agriculture's problems with game damage have increased.

Deer, geese and cranes trample down and eat up budding plants in the fields.

But the greatest damage is caused by wild boar.

- There is everything, says Mattias Hammarstedt.

The problems with wild boar on his farm in Skurup municipality began a few years ago.

From being a herd of wild boar that made occasional visits to the fields, he now has pigs that settle in his rapeseed field and make raids in the sugar beet and pea fields.

- They can put as much energy as they like on a small piece of food and if they are going to eat their fill of peas, they will soon have eaten an entire field.

Change crops and build fences

The methods available to reduce the consequences of the wild boar's ravages are to switch to less appetizing crops, build fences or shoot.

- For my part, I should probably stop using the rapeseed because they settle in the rapeseed fields in the summer.

Some farmers have had to stop growing wheat and have instead switched to grain with sharper ears that the wild boars do not like so much.

Fencing is costly, and not a sustainable method, according to Mattias Hammarstedt.

- My neighbor has set up a fence and it protects his field, but it increases the pressure on mine, he says.

Shoots of wild boar

He has instead chosen to shoot the tribe.

It is a time-consuming job that does not always pay off.

- I'm lucky to have friends who can imagine sitting on workouts late at night.

Last year they shot nine wild boars, so far this year six.

Mattias Hammarstedt has put a lot of time and effort into creating living space for the wildlife, among other things by sowing flowering plants along the fields.

But they also become perfect hiding places for wild boars that, in addition to scouring the earth, also scare away deer.

- I care about the wildlife, but the wild boar is destroying it now.

The risk is that you get tired.
