Olivier Faure announced on September 13 in the
Journal du dimanche
that he would be a candidate for his own succession at the head of the Socialist Party (PS), at its next congress.
For him, it is a question of agreeing on a common project with the whole left, then on a presidential candidate.
A call which for the moment comes up against the inclinations of candidatures of the rebellious Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the ecologist Yannick Jadot.
Olivier Faure warns them: to leave to divide is to take the risk of disappearing.
"
I want a government contract
"
“
I don't want a softening synthesis with the rest of the left, I want a government contract.
But under these conditions, all the questions we ask ourselves about who embodies all this, this question will come in due time,
”he said during the National Council of the Socialist Party, which met on Sunday, September 13 at the House of Chemistry, in Paris.
"
If obviously each of us says
:
'I have my candidate, take it or leave it', we know the outcome: there will not be a common candidate, there will be candidates who will claim to be common candidate of the second round, but there will be no second round for the left and for the environment.
"
The first secretary of the Socialist Party insisted on this threat which would hover, according to him, on the French left.
“
And absent from the second round of the presidential election for the third time in 20 years, this is no longer an exception, it is the rule.
And this rule, it poses the question of our final erasure.
Not ours, socialists, the erasure of everyone.
"
A congress of mobilization and affirmation
The PS will hold its congress on December 12 and 13 in Villeurbanne, in the suburbs of Lyon, to “
assert its
socialist
identity
”.
"
It must be a congress of affirmation of the identity
" of the socialists, a "
congress of mobilization
" for "
refoundation
".
"
We are not a museum party that glorifies the elders,
" said Olivier Faure.
According to its statutes, the PS must organize a congress every two years.
Olivier Faure was elected first secretary in April 2018, in Aubervilliers, a year after the heavy defeats of 2017.
