Thus, the government turns 180 degrees since last autumn's budget.

By then, the EU had begun to measure emissions in a new, more realistic way, which meant that most cars had higher measured emissions.

Some bonus cars would then no longer qualify as climate bonus cars.

But the government chose to ease the requirements and raise the emission limit from 60 grams per kilometer to 70 grams.

Nine out of ten received a bonus for reduced requirements

As SVT's review has shown, nine out of ten cars that received a climate bonus this year thanks to the government easing the requirements for large heavy Volvo models, the vast majority of SUVs.

At the same time, the proportion of bonus cars over two tonnes has increased from 26 percent last year to 35 percent.

Large, heavy cars are generally worse for the climate according to researchers.

As recently as last week, Minister of Finance Magdalena Andersson (S) in connection with SVT's review defended the government's increase that it is good for jobs that people buy Volvo, and it is better that they buy large plug-in hybrids from Volvo than completely fossil-powered cars.

The reversal

But now the government is completely changing, and lowering the limit back to 60 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer.

This means that the large Volvo SUVs will in most cases be without a climate bonus.

The maximum bonus is also increased, from SEK 60,000 to SEK 70,000.

You get that amount for a pure electric car.

- As Minister of Climate, I naturally think the best thing is if you can choose a car that does not emit anything at all, and now they are on the market.

There are quite a few mid-price class cars that come out with full cars.

I hope those who will buy a new car and can afford to choose such a car instead, says Isabella Lövin.

Increased vehicle tax

The vehicle tax for fossil cars with high emissions is also raised further.

Volvo welcomes in a comment to SVT that there will be a continued climate bonus for plug-in hybrid technology.

This means that models other than the largest SUVs can qualify for the bonus system next year as well.
