The World Health Organization has warned of an increase in the number of cases of Covid-19 in the next two months in Europe, as Austria spoke of a "second wave" of the epidemic that the world feared would arrive.

The WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, told «AFP» yesterday that the organization expects an increase in the number of deaths from Covid-19 in Europe in October and November, which will be "harsh" in the face of the epidemic.

"It will get tougher," he added.

"In October and November, we will witness an increase in deaths," he said, while the number of injuries registered an increase in the old continent, but the number of daily deaths is stable there.

"We are at a time when countries do not want to hear this kind of bad news, and I understand that," he added, but at the same time he sought to send a "positive message" that the epidemic "will recede at some point."

The World Health Organization in Europe is organizing a meeting of its about 50 member states on Monday and Tuesday to discuss the response to the epidemic and agree on its five-year strategy.

On the other hand, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the countries of the world should join the Kovacs initiative before the deadline expires on Friday, in order to ensure that any vaccine to prevent the emerging corona virus is distributed fairly and effectively.

So far, 92 low-income countries are seeking help through "Kovacs", which is part of the organization's "Act Accelerator" umbrella, to promote the development of vaccines, treatment methods and diagnostics to combat the Covid-19 epidemic.

About 80 of the highest-income countries have expressed interest in the initiative, but many of them will have to confirm their intention to join by the end of this week.

"If people in middle and low-income countries do not get vaccinated, the virus will continue to kill people, and the global economic recovery will also be delayed," Tedros said at a regional event for the Organization for Europe that was broadcast online.
