September 13, 2020 The death toll so far caused by the fires that are ravaging the west coast of the United States has risen to over 30.

The states affected are California, Washington and Oregon, and according to what the BBC reports, dozens of people are missing in the latter alone.

In Oregon, the situation is so dire that an emergency services official said the state should prepare for a "deadly mass" disaster.

The fires have been raging for three weeks now, leveling millions of hectares, destroying thousands of homes and forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Meanwhile, pending the arrival in California of President Trump on Monday, the Democratic governor of the most populous state in the US, Gavin Newsom, stressed that "the debate on climate change is over: this is a damn real climate emergency that it's happening".

In recent days, the president has instead insisted on the underestimation of the climate emergency and the decision to exit the Paris agreement, attributing the entire responsibility for what is happening on the West coast to the mismanagement of forests.

"This is a point - Governor Newsom replied - but it is not the point".
