Everton ended nearly eight years without a win against Tottenham by beating Spurs at home (1-0) on Sunday in Matchday 1 of the Premier League, which saw Leicester also get off to a good start at West Bromwich Albion ( 3-0).

- The beautiful promises of Everton

Everton defeated the Indian sign by taking the best of Tottenham for the first time since December 2012 and 15 games (7 draws, 8 losses).

It is also the first time that José Mourinho starts a season with a defeat in 19 years on the bench (11 wins, 7 draws).

An unstoppable header from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, on a very good wrapped free kick from Lucas Digne (1-0, 55th), gave the Toffees this important victory on the cusp of a season they are approaching ambitious.

Carlo Ancelotti had decided to launch from the kick-off his three midfielder recruits - the Brazilian Allan, the Colombian James Rodriguez and the French Abdoulaye Doucouré -, yet arrived in the last eight days.

The result was quite pleasant.

The very active Allan was voted man of the match and James Rodriguez was very good for just over an hour in orientation and long play.

Opposite, José Mourinho had also trusted his summer acquisitions, Matt Doherty in defense and Pierre-Emile Hojberg in the midfield.

But despite the presence of a quality attacking quartet, with Harry Kane leading and Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli in support, Spurs seemed too cautious in the first period.

They created good opportunities on a fleeing cross from Son (24th) and forced Jordan Pickford to two beautiful reflex parades by Alli (33rd) and Doherty, after a nice sleazy from Kane (42nd).

But Everton did not steal their victory and should even have opened the scoring in the 16th minute, if the Brazilian Richarlison, who had dribbled Hugo Lloris, had managed to straighten his ball to the open cage or served Calvert-Lewin in the axis.

- Leicester got off to a good start -

Having finished the previous season on the kneecaps and let slip a place on the podium that was stretched out to him, Leicester launched their 2020/21 season perfectly by winning 3-0 on the lawn of the promoted West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

After Fulham by Arsenal (3-0) and Leeds by Liverpool (4-3), the third promoted was therefore also beaten.

Finally 5th last season, Leicester, who let left side Ben Chilwell at Chelsea for £ 50m (EUR 54m), joined Arsenal provisionally at the top of the table.

Deprived at the kick-off of their playmaker James Maddison, on the bench, and their North Irish central defender Jonny Evans, suspended, the Foxes were patient to resist the energetic start of WBA.

Brendan Rodgers' men conceded few chances in the first act, despite the presence of midfielder Wilfred Ndidi in the line of defense, facing the second best Championship attack (D2) last year (77 goals) , before taking the blow in the second.

It was first the Belgian rookie Timothy Castagne, the side arrived from Atalanta Bergamo, who found himself in the area to place a victorious header at six meters (0-1, 56th).

Top scorer in the Premier League last season, with 23 goals, Jamie Vardy then went with his penalty double, including the first he got himself, both times taking goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on the wrong foot to his right (2-0, 74th and 3-0, 84th).

What probably appease Rodgers a little who complained about the passivity of his club in the transfer market, while the season promises to be dense between a championship picked up because of Euro-2020 next summer and the Europa League to be disputed.
