On Saturday, a government-critical women's demonstration in the Belarusian capital Minsk took place.

According to SVT's correspondent Elin Jönsson, about 100 women have been arrested in connection with the demonstration.

The Minsk-based human rights organization Vyasna has identified 37 of the arrested women.

Eyewitnesses tell of how the police used violence against the protesters who formed a human chain to try to stop the arrests.

- The arrests began when the women were in small groups and were on their way to the demonstration, says Elin Jönsson.

Moving images from the news agency Reuters also show how protesters attack the police in connection with the riot.

The police use violence against women

Since Alexander Lukashenko declared himself the winner of the questionable presidential election on August 9, major popular protests have erupted in Belarus.

According to Elin Jönsson, the police in Belarus have not used violence against women since the days just after the election.

As the women's demonstrations have now increased in strength, the police have once again become violent towards women.

- It is the first time in several weeks that the police use so much violence against women, she says.
