Residents in San Francisco woke up earlier this week to a darkened, orange sky.

The darkness and the color are due to the ash blocking the sunlight.

- It felt like the end of the world.

"It was worrying that it was still dark and it was strange to have lunch in the dark," Catherine Geeslin told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The fires, which have been raging in the US state for several weeks now, have consumed 2.3 million acres.

Ten people have been confirmed dead and thousands have been forced to leave their homes.
