Gunilla Tholander's daughter Jennie was shot to death in an apartment in Västervik in October 2019. Her boyfriend was charged with murder, but the district court did not consider that intent could be proven, and instead sentenced him to cause another person's death.

Something Gunilla Tholander herself chose to appeal.

Today came the Court of Appeal's judgment, which confirms the district court's assessment.

- I would have preferred my daughter's boyfriend to receive a longer sentence, says Gunilla Tholander.

"Correct and expected"

Kalmar District Court could not, without reasonable doubt, rule out that the incident was an accident.

For that, they went on the district court's line and sentenced the boyfriend for aggravated causing another's death to six years and four months in prison.

The boyfriend was thus acquitted of murder.

- It is correct and it was expected, says lawyer Fredrik Liljeblad, the 24-year-old boyfriend's defender.

Feeling of emptiness

The verdict in the district court has received attention and received criticism, including from well-known criminologist and debater Nina Rung.

Many have highlighted the fact that the woman previously lived in sheltered housing, because the relationship with her boyfriend had been violent.

- The biggest problem is that the public has not been present at the trial and still thinks that they have a better opportunity to decide how it should be judged than a court, says Fredrik Liljeblad, the boyfriend's defender.

Gunilla Tholander says today that it is a feeling of emptiness, but that she will continue to fight for what she believes is right.

- I intend to continue and protest, she says.
