The US government is canceling more than a thousand visas for Chinese citizens

The US government has canceled more than a thousand visas for Chinese citizens for reasons of national security, since last June, according to a US State Department spokesman.

The visas were revoked based on a presidential announcement issued on May 29 to suspend entry to the United States of Chinese students and researchers who are considered a security risk.

"This declaration protects the national security of the United States by limiting (China) ability to take advantage of Chinese graduate students and researchers in the United States to steal American technology, intellectual property and information to develop advanced military capabilities," the spokesman said in a statement yesterday.

He added, "We continue to welcome legitimate students and researchers from China who do not achieve the Chinese Communist Party's objectives of military hegemony."

This statement comes a week after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that senior Chinese diplomats will need approval from the US government to visit university campuses and meet with local officials.
