The U.S. Open tennis tournament saw the battle of the Russians when 24-year-old Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev faced his compatriot and childhood friend Andrei Rublev on Wednesday in the men’s quarterfinals.
Medvedev defeated Rublev 7–6 (8/6), 6–3 and 7–6 (7/5).
Rublev took the first half of the match, but Medvedev managed to rush into the lead in the game he described as tight.
- In these moments, it feels like you have to fight for every point, Medvedev said and described his playmate’s game as incredible.
In the semi-finals, the Russian player will face either Alex De Minaur of Australia or Dominic Thiem of Austria, whose game will be decided later in the morning in Finnish time.
Medvedev fought his way to the open finals last year, but lost to Rafael Nadal of Spain.
Williams and Azarenka face off in the semi-finals
In the women's quarterfinals, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka advanced to the semifinals against the Czech Elise Mertens.
Azarenka cannoned his wins in 6-1 and 6-0, with the game lasting just over an hour.
The Belarusian star was pleased with the progress of his game.
- I feel like I managed to implement my plan.
I was going to use my pace and power on the ball, i.e. I tried some kind of variation to get him out of balance, Azarenka described.
Former number one on the women’s world list, Azarenka will face tennis star Serena Williams in the semi-finals.
Williams beat Azarenka in the open 2012 and 2013 finals.
Williams previously advanced to the women’s singles semi-finals by knocking out Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 4–6, 6–3, 6–2 in her semi-finals.
