The tests of a vaccine against the coronavirus are linked across the world.

On Wednesday, it is Peru's turn to launch a phase of clinical trials, with 3,000 volunteers, of a potential vaccine from a Chinese laboratory.

The number of applicants exceeded expectations, 9,000 people registered in less than three hours.

Only rule: not to have contracted the virus

The Sinopharm group vaccine is inoculated by intramuscular injection into the arm of volunteers aged 18 to 75 who must not have already contracted the coronavirus.

A second group, still made up of 3,000 volunteers will receive the vaccine in October.

Two strains of the virus and a placebo will be randomly inoculated into the volunteers, divided into three groups: 2,000 will receive the so-called “Wuhan” strain, 2,000 the so-called “Beijing” strain and the other 2,000 will receive a placebo.

A Chinese scientific mission of around thirty people is responsible for coordinating the project, the results of which are not expected before December.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra announced in mid-August that his government was committed to coordinating participation in clinical trials of vaccines developed in China, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany.

More than 30,000 deaths in Peru

The Latin America and Caribbean region alone has recorded more than 300,000 deaths.

The epidemic particularly hits Brazil (128,000), Mexico (68,000) but also Peru, which on Tuesday crossed the threshold of 30,000 deaths.

Above all, the country has the highest rate in the world of deaths in relation to the number of inhabitants, with 91 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to a report established from official sources.

On Wednesday, Peru crossed the threshold of 700,000 contaminations, according to the Ministry of Health, with officially 702,776 cases recorded.
