Campaign: US elections: a referendum on Trump
Hackers from
China, Iran and Russia
have tried to attack organizations and individuals linked to the campaigns of US President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, with the intention of influencing the general elections in November, according to a report published this Thursday by
Microsoft
.
The report assures that the infiltration activities they have detected "make it clear that foreign groups have increased their efforts with the aim of affecting the 2020 elections."
The attacks occurred in recent months and
include movements by Russian groups
that have already been identified by the US government for trying to influence the 2016 elections.
Details of the report are released a day after a US government informant revealed that the White House and the Department of Homeland Security
tried to downplay intelligence reports
that showed the dimensions of Russian electoral interference in order
to bad to President "Trump
and instead focused on investigating Chinese and Iranian influence.
Russian hackers
targeted more than 200 organizations
, including the Republican and Democratic parties, as well as consultants linked to election-related activities, Microsoft said today.
In addition, they focused on European and UK organizations.
Specifically, the report mentions the
European People's Party
and the
German Marshall Fund
think
tank
, based in Washington and Berlin.
Meanwhile, Chinese hackers have tried to infiltrate teams of people associated with Joe Biden's presidential campaign, as well as leaders of international relations influence groups and think tanks such as the
Atlantic Council
since March, according to the report.
"The (Chinese) group also targeted an important person associated in the past with the Trump Administration," he added.
And groups from Iran tried to gain access between May and June to
accounts of people related to the Donald Trump campaign
, as well as senior officials of the US administration.
Microsoft researchers believe that Russian hackers' techniques have evolved and now include the automation of some aspects of their
access attempts by "brute force"
, as well as "new reconnaissance tools and new techniques to conceal their attacks." .
The Redmont (Washington) multinational assures that its security tools
rejected "most of the attacks
.
"
"We believe that it is important that the world is aware of the threats to democratic processes. It is essential that all those involved in these processes around the world are aware of these threats and take steps to protect themselves on a personal and professional level," Microsoft said.
The multinational, one of the largest contractors of the US government, also
calls for more federal funds to be dedicated to protecting the integrity of elections and democracy
.
Microsoft's report is more detailed than any other the US government has offered on foreign interference in the November elections, in which Trump is at stake for re-election.
