Start the clip in the player to hear the interview with "Samir" who tells about how they justify the construction of so-called roadblocks in Angered.

After several weeks of escalating the conflict between the so-called Backagänget and a well-known family network in Angered, the situation was very tense at the end of August in parts of Angered in northeast Gothenburg.

Men in safety vests stopped cars and started flashing flashlights to check who was in the vehicles, and people living and working in the area were required to provide identification.

For the first time, one of the men involved on the Angered side, who is here called "Samir", now gives his picture of why this happened.

- It was to control who enters the area.

So that no one comes here to invent something stupid, he says when SVT Nyheter Väst meets him in Hammarkullen in Angered.

Is it not the task of the police to protect the population?

- They can not do it forever, I've told you ten times.

They will never be able to do that, says "Samir" when he explains how they justified their actions.

The gangs met at a hotel in Gothenburg

It's a bit into September when we meet "Samir".

After a couple of weeks and reports of a high-profile meeting where the gangs agreed on a hotel in central Gothenburg, children are once again playing on the playgrounds.

That was not the case before.

Then the streets echoed almost empty and many residents stayed inside when the conflict was most intense.

"Samir" believes that residents in the area should understand that what is happening is for their own good.

In several places, there was concern that a child would intervene if the rival gang came and shot at them, states "Samir" and refers to the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old girl in Botkyrka in early August.

Police: Not the gangs' job to protect the area

Fredrik Terje is an external officer in a local police area northeast of Gothenburg.

He says that "Samir's" attitude puts the finger on a big problem.

- Many of these criminal individuals, whether it is Lövgärdet or Hammarkullen or Hjällbo, they see it as their areas.

That it is their job to protect.

But it is not, it is we authorities who must do it.
