Whistleblower Brian Murphy, who has been high-ranking in the Department of Homeland Security, says the order in May this year came from Chad Wolf, who heads the department.

The report released on Wednesday states that Chad Wolf and Kenneth T. Cuccinelli repeatedly raised the threat from China in security reports.

At the same time, reporting on Russia's involvement would be toned down.

Brian Murphy also says he was relegated from his position after refusing to do as the White House wanted.

Should shape opinions

The department's second chief of staff, Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, is also said to have ordered him to change intelligence assessments to make the threat of white power movements less serious, reports The Washington Post.

Cuccinelli is also said to have ordered the inclusion of information about "violent left-wing groups", according to the report.

Chad Wolf and Kenneth T.Cuccinelli, the two top officials, both appointed by President Donald Trump, were thus able to shape the department's views on Trump's rhetoric and interests, reports the Washington Post.

Brian Murphy states in his complaint that Chad Wolf in turn had said that the order came from President Donald Trump's national security adviser Robert O'Brien.

"Serious complaints"

The Democrats in the House of Representatives' intelligence committee say the information in the report is a curtailment of the law and an abuse of power that "puts the nation and its security at serious risk."

Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said in a statement that Murphy's complaints were serious.

Senior officials downplay Russia's involvement in the US election in security reports and make false statements about terrorist threats at the southern border, in order for the intelligence service to match the president's rhetoric, says Adam Schiff according to CNN.
