The head of the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Dr. Rashid Al-Leem, revealed during a meeting organized as part of the “Tawasul” initiative launched by the Sharjah Press Club, about the most prominent complaints of the emirate’s residents regarding the authority, in light of the Corona pandemic, indicating that it focused on the high electricity and water bills. "The authority passed through the pandemic a major challenge due to the increase in demand for electricity and water services, and the significant increase in bills at the emirate level," Al-Leem emphasized.

He said, "The authority's follow-up to the complaints and observations of the public, showed that the high electricity bills are due to the high temperatures that affect the work of air conditioners, and increase their need to work for long periods, because residents remain in their homes."

He added that reducing electricity by 10% for a period of three months during the "Corona" crisis cost the Sharjah government more than 310 million dirhams.

And he indicated that the authority noticed during the pandemic a significant increase in water consumption by two million gallons per day, and after sampling from houses it became clear that temporary swimming pools, and replacing their water daily, caused a significant increase in water consumption, pointing to an extensive campaign to educate residents of the importance of following health systems to mobilize Swimming pools, and the use of chlorine in certain proportions, so that the water is not replaced daily.

Al-Leem revealed the establishment of a power station in the Hamriyah area currently, the first phase of which will open in the middle of next year, and another energy project in the Layyah area for energy production, to provide services to all residents of the emirate, indicating that the authority has succeeded in restructuring and simplifying procedures and shortening the time that used to take three To six months to deliver water and electricity services for less than 24 hours, and to cancel the visit to the Authority’s building by 100%.

He stated that, last September, the authority received 2035 electricity service requests for residential and commercial buildings.
