Their vehicles, oddly loaded, had aroused the curiosity of the gendarmes.
Two men aged 35 and 40 were sentenced for the theft of sheep to eight months in prison on Monday evening by the court in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique), reports the newspaper
Ouest-France
.
Last April, the gendarmes arrested them near Vertou, south of Nantes, and discovered an unusual load: 32 sheep, some dead, were in the three minivans, which were traveling in convoy.
That evening, the three drivers were able to escape on foot but two of them were found by investigators.
The defendants, “fathers of families” and “socially integrated” according to
Ouest-France
, contested their presence on the scene.
In total, they were accused of having stolen 44 sheep from a cooperative in Deux-Sèvres.
Nearly 250 liters of diesel had also been stolen.
