The Latvian government wrote to the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) on Wednesday that the umbrella organization for the sport would strip Belarus of its rights to host the World Cup due to the turbulent political situation in the country, the Insidethegames website said.
Latvia and Belarus were scheduled to hold a joint World Cup tournament last spring, but due to the corona pandemic, the tournament was postponed to next year.
In its letter, the Latvian government asks the IIHF to replace Minsk, Belarus, as the second World Championship city.
Latvia has previously threatened to withdraw its responsibility for organizing the World Cup if the political situation in Belarus does not change.
The board of the International Hockey Federation is scheduled to address the issue of the World Cup in Belarus at its next meeting on 17 September.
